Lacey mittens:

Materials: Noro Silk Garden Lite, 1x 50g ball (colour 2043, blue/brown)

Also shown in Noro Silk Garden, 2x50g balls (65g used) (colour 211, orange/black)

Tension: 20sts x 26rows over 10cm in lace stitch

Suggested needles: 1 pair 4mm, 1 pair 4.5mm (also requires a stitch holder)

Finished size: 22cm long, 10cm wide

Abbreviations:

k2tog knit 2 together

k2tog tbl knit 2 together through the back of the loop

p2tog purl 2 together

yo yarn over

w/s wrong side

r/s right side

Left mitten:

Cast on 44sts on 4mm needles

Work in 1:1 rib for the first 8 rows

Change to 4.5mm needles

r9: k

r10, and all w/s rows: p

r11: K1, (k2tog, yo, k1, p1, k1, yo, k2tog tbl) x6, k1

r13:  k1 (k2tog, k1, yo, k1, yo, k1, k2tog tbl) x6, k1

Rows 11-14 form the lace pattern. Continue, repeating these two rows, until work measures 7.5cm, ending on a w/s row.

Divide for thumb:

Work first 3 panels of lace stitch, move the remaining 22sts from the left needle to a holder.

Next row (w/s): cast on 7, p14, put remaining 15sts on to a holder.

r/s: work 7sts in lace pattern, k7

w/s: p

Repeat the last 2 rows until thumb measures 6cm.

Shape top of thumb:

r1: k2, (k2tog, k1) to end (9sts)

r2: p

r3: (k1, k2tog) to end (6sts)

r4: p2tog x3

Cut yarn (approx. 35cm tail), thread through the last 3sts and stitch the seam of the thumb.

Hand:

With r/s facing move the group of 22sts from the holder to the left needle. Rejoin the yarn at the base of the thumb and work these 22sts in lace pattern.

Next row: p22, pick up and p 7sts from cast on edge of thumb, p remaining 15sts from holder.

Continue in lace pattern until work measures 19cm.

Shape top:

r1: k1, (k2togtbl, k5, work 7sts in lace pattern, k5, k2tog) x2, k1

r3: k1, (k2togtbl, k4, work 7sts in lace pattern, k4, k2tog) x2, k1

r5: k1, (k2togtbl, k3, work 7sts in lace pattern, k3, k2tog) x2, k1

r7: Cast off

Right mitten:

The left mitten has the thumb on the 3^rd lace panel from the right. The right mitten should have the thumb on the 3^rd lace panel from the left.

Follow pattern for left mitten. When dividing for the thumb, work 4 panels of lace stitch putting 15 remaining sts onto holder. Work the thumb in the same way.  When rejoining to work the hand, bear in mind that you will have 15sts in place of the 22.
